Preparation of a-Interferon for Topical Ocular Use

a-Interferon protein is very fragile—similar to insulin. Do not shake the solution to mix it. Below are directions to dilute alpha interferon to 300 units/mL for topical ocular use:

Supplies:

  • 1 vial a-Interferon (3,000,000 units/0.5 mL; Roche Laboratories)

  • 1 Liter of 0.9% sodium chloride for injection

Procedure:

  1. Combine 0.05 mL a-Interferon with 9.95 ml of 0.9% sodium chloride solution for a final volume of 10 mL at a concentration of 30,000 units/mL. Gently swirl the mixture until mixed well.

  2. Remove 0.1 mL of the solution prepared in step 1 (30,000 units/mL) and mix with 9.9 mL of 0.9% sodium chloride solution. This will result in a final volume of 10 mL at a concentration of 300 units/mL. Gently swirl the mixture until mixed well.

Topical Treatment:

Apply 1 drop to the affected eye(s) q 8 h.
